About Caithness Coast SSSI

The Caithness Coast SSSI is located along the north coast of Scotland within the historic county of Caithness. This protected area covers a stretch of approximately 30 kilometers of coastal habitat, characterized by cliffs, rocky shores, sandy bays, and intertidal zones. The coastline supports important geological features including layered sedimentary cliffs and fossil-bearing strata, contributing to its designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Ecologically, the area is particularly notable for its seabird populations, including internationally important colonies of puffins, guillemots, razorbills, and kittiwakes that nest on cliff ledges during breeding seasons. The coastal waters and adjacent peatlands also provide habitat for otters, seals, and a variety of marine life.

Historically, Caithness Coast has a rich cultural heritage, with nearby landmarks such as brochs and ancient settlements reflecting the area's human use dating back to prehistoric times. Visitor appeal centers on birdwatching, coastal walks, and photography, with accessible footpaths offering dramatic views of sea stacks, arches, and the Pentland Firth beyond. The area’s remote and wild character offers a tranquil experience for outdoor enthusiasts and naturalists alike. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining habitat quality to support wildlife populations and preserve the geodiversity of the cliffs and shorelines. Though no formal campgrounds lie directly within the SSSI boundaries, nearby towns provide visitor accommodations and serve as gateways for exploring this part of the Scottish Highlands coast.
